“The man allegedly took his mother’s bicycle without her permission and when she asked him about it, he started beating her. After discovering that she had died, the suspect allegedly buried her in his bedroom in the hut,” said Mulanje Police spokesperson Gresham Ngwira.

He said the incident took place at Kuchera Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Nthiramanja in the district.

Ngwira said the body was discovered by the village head and some villagers who went to the hut to look for some missing chickens.

“After discovering that the chickens were missing, the owner followed footprints of the thief since rain had just stopped and the ground was still wet. The footprints led into Bonongwe’s hut,” he said.

Ngwira added that the man then reported the matter to the village head who accompanied him to the hut. Upon entry, they saw a foot protruding from the floor and then discovered that a human body had been buried there.

He said the villagers reported the matter to police who exhumed the body and took it to Mulanje District Hospital for postmortem.

Ngwira added that the villagers described the suspect as one who has always behaved well.

He said the suspect has been charged with murder. n
